Collegium recommends Justice RS Jhala to be made permanent judge of Rajasthan HC

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended that additional judge of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice RS Jhala, be made a permanent judge of the High Court.

In doing so, it has expressed its concurrence with a unanimous recommendation made in this regard by the Rajasthan High Court Collegium, as well as the state government.

Four other additional judges were also recommended by the Rajasthan High Court Collegium to be made permanent. However, the Supreme Court Collegium has decided to defer consideration of their names for now.

Justice RS Jhala was given preference as he is due to retire soon, on July 2 this year. On this aspect, the Supreme Court Collegium’s resolution states,

“Since Mr. Justice Ramchandra Singh Jhala (mentioned at Sl. No. 5 above) is going to retire on attaining the age of superannuation on 2 nd July, 2018, the Collegium considers it appropriate to take up for consideration, for the present, only his case. The proposal pertaining to other Additional Judges whose current term would be expiring much later will be taken up for consideration at appropriate stage.”

Justice Jhala’s name has been approved after taking into consideration the material on record. The material considered includes the report of a two-Judge committee constituted to assess the judgments passed by Justice Jhala and the other recommended judges.

Given its finding that Justice Jhala is suitable for the post, the Collegium has resolved as follows,

“In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend, for the present, that Mr. Justice Ramchandra Singh Jhala, Additional Judge be appointed as Permanent Judge of the Rajasthan High Court against one of the existing vacancies.”

The other additional judges pending consideration are Justices Ashok Kumar Gaur, Manoj Kumar Garg, Inderjeet Singh and Virendra Kumar Mathur.
