Breaking: SAM Banking and Finance Head Sapan Gupta to join ArcelorMittal as General Counsel

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas Partner and the National Head of Banking and Finance practice, Sapan Gupta is joining ArcelorMittal as General Counsel, according to sources.

Sapan had joined SAM in 2015 from Bajaj Finance, where he was the Chief Legal Officer. Sapan specialises in Banking and Finance, Investment Banking, Debt Capital Markets, Consumer Banking and Real Estate.

Gupta is a graduate of Delhi University and holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School. He is dual qualified to practice in India and New York.

He joined Bajaj Finance in 2014 as their first legal officer after working with Standard Chartered for almost six years. He joined Standard Chartered in 2008 prior, to which he was working with Sidley Austin in New York. He has previously worked at HSBC India, ICICI Bank, and Tata Housing and Development.

Last month, ArcelorMittal had completed acquisition of Essar Steel and SAM & Co had advised the Committee of Creditors of Essar Steel India Limited (ESIL) while L&L Partners acted for ArcelorMittal.
