Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA) has called for contributions to aid its relief work in the Sunderbans and Kolkata's Beleghata slum, two areas severely affected by the massive destruction caused by Cyclone Amphan and the persisting COVID-19 pandemic. (COVID-19 and Cyclone Relief Work Press Release)
Home to many small villages and communities, the Sunderbans has been badly hit after the cyclone and the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the COVID-19 situation worsens, IDIA is conducting a gradual assessment of the area, with the help of its volunteers, resident scholars and trainees. IDIA has already helped 250 families from 3 villages, and aims to provide further help and supplies to every community in the area that requires immediate assistance.
IDIA intends to provide Rs 1,500 each for 1,000 families in the Sunderbans, thereby requiring a total amount of Rs 15 lakh.
IDIA has been sending rations along with some money to 15 families in Beleghata in order to help them meet their daily needs amid the COVID-19 crisis.
Moreover, after the cyclone's hard-hitting blow, even their rehabilitation shelters have been destroyed. Currently, these families have been camping in a school while IDIA continues to provide necessities. Next, IDIA aims to rebuild their shelters.
IDIA aims to raise Rs 20,000 each for rebuilding 15 'kaccha' houses for shelter, which would total up to Rs 3 lakh.
IDIA is further attempting to raise Rs 1.2 lakh for food, groceries and medicines for 15 families in the Beleghata slums.
