Delhi court denies interim bail to Umar Khalid

A Delhi court on Tuesday denied interim bail to activist Umar Khalid in Delhi riots conspiracy case.

Khalid had sought 15 days' interim bail to attend to his ailing mother during her medical surgery and to take part in the Chehlum ritual of his uncle who died last month.

Delhi Police had objected to the interim bail, stating that his mother's surgery is not an emergency and Khalid's uncle is his distant relative. It was also stated that there were no exceptional or extraordinary circumstances warranting the grant of interim bail.  

After considering the case, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma courts agreed with the Delhi Police's submission that Khalid's late uncle is not his close relative.

The Court also said that Khalid's sisters and father can take care of his mother before and after the surgery.

"Accordingly, finding the reasons unreasonable, the Court doesn't deem it appropriate to grant the desired relief to the applicant. The application is dismissed," the Court ordered.

Khalid was arrested in September 2020 and is being tried for criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several other offences under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
