Delhi court grants protection to Haryanvi singer Sapna Choudhary in domestic violence case

A Delhi court recently granted interim protection to Haryanvi singer and actor Sapna Choudhary in a domestic violence case..Judicial Magistrate First Class (Mahila court) Nidhi Singh at Dwarka Courts restrained Choudhary’s husband, Yashveer Sahu, from approaching or contacting her in any manner, visiting her residence or workplace, including the venue of her upcoming film premiere, or committing any act of domestic violence until the next date of hearing..Choudhary approached the court under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She alleged that she was forced to leave the shared household with Sahu due to his conduct and is presently residing at her parental home in Najafgarh, Delhi.She also placed an affidavit before the court attesting to the alleged domestic violence meted out to her earlier, along with photographs reflecting prima facie injuries on her body and a pen drive containing audio recordings in support of the allegations.Her counsel submitted that she had apprehensions that she may be subjected to further domestic violence. Her counsel added that there was also a possibility of Sahu creating a public scene during the June 10 premiere of her film Momacu.It was argued that while a temporary protection order would cause no prejudice to Sahu, denial of immediate relief could result in grave injustice to Choudhary and adversely affect both her safety and professional commitments..Taking note of the material placed on record, the court found sufficient grounds to grant interim protection to Choudhary. “Respondent (Sahu) is restrained from contacting the petitioner (Choudhary) in any manner or visiting her place of residence or work (temporary or permanent, including the venue of premier of the movie as stated above) and committing any act of domestic violence till the NDOH,” the court ordered.It also directed the concerned Protection Officer and the local Station House Officer to ensure compliance with its directions and provide assistance and protection to Choudhary if required..The order also records that Choudhary’s counsel informed the court that she is the legally wedded wife of Sahu and that two minor children were born out of the wedlock, who are presently in his custody.The court, however, noted that no documents had yet been furnished to prima facie establish the marriage. Subsequently, after assurance from Choudhary's counsel that supporting documents would be placed on record on the next date of hearing, the Court found it appropriate to issue summons to Sahu and posted the matter for further hearing on July 25. .Choudhary was represented by Advocate Preeti Singh.
