DMK MP P Wilson writes to NLUs to implement reservation

Senior Advocate and Member of Parliament P Wilson on Tuesday wrote to the Vice-Chancellors of National Law Universities (NLUs) across the country asking them to implement exact State-specific reservations for courses offered by them..The representation was a reminder of a letter dated December 25, 2021, requesting all the NLUs to follow the constitutional mandate of reservation. It was noted that apart from Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU), Lucknow and National University for Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, no other university responded to or acted on the earlier letter.“I am deeply saddened to note that barring two National Law Schools- RMLNLU, Lucknow and NUALS, Kochi who responded positively claiming that they are implementing exact state reservations in All India Seats and State/Local Domicile Seats in National Law Schools/University in the courses offered by them, other NLUs have neither responded nor have taken any steps to implement the Constitutional reservations/State reservations for SC/ST/OBCs,” Wilson's letter stated..The Senior Counsel referred to a recent judgment of the Supreme Court upholding 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in State-contributed seats to All-India Quota seats.“I am citing this judgment only to point out that the Hon’ble Supreme Court had upheld social justice and social inclusion in medical and dental education,” he explained..It was stressed that there was a need for representation in law schools now more than ever, and the failure to provide exact reservations was violative of Articles 15 and 46 of the Constitution.“The failure to implement exact quantum of state SC/ST/OBC’s reservation in All India Seats and State/Local Domicile Seats in NLUs will inevitably result in legal consequences," he cautioned..In this context, the MP again requested NLUs to turn their attention to the pressing issue and do the needful to ensure strict implementation of reservation.
