The hearing in the contempt petition against advocate Mathews Nedumpara in Supreme Court witnessed some very interesting remarks by Justice Rohinton Nariman.

Mathews Nedumpara has already been found guilty of contempt of court for taking Fali Nariman’s name while arguing a case on the designation of Senior Advocates. The Court is currently hearing the matter to decide the punishment to be imposed.

When the matter was taken up today, Mathews Nedumpara began his arguments.

Justice Nariman intervened and questioned the bona fides of Mathews Nedumpara.

“You know I have a daughter who practices law and she is not allowed to enter this court by me.”

Nariman J. said that if the matter was issued based, the name of another judge whose father practices in Supreme Court might have also been mentioned

“Fali Nariman is not the issue. The issue is relatives of judges practicing in the same court. Father of Justice UU Lalit practices here. If the matter was issue based, why was the name of Justice Lalit not mentioned”, Justice Nariman demanded.

The matter is now kept for 2 pm today after Mathews Nedumpara requested for the same citing unavailability of his lawyer.
