Encroachments reflect failure of government to provide basic shelter to the poor: Madras High Court

The High Court directed the State government to file a compliance report on the demarcation of the boundary of the Buckingham canal and removal of encroachments from all three water bodies.

Expressing its displeasure at the Tamil Nadu government's inaction over ridding the three main waterbodies in Chennai of encroachments, the Madras High Court said on Monday that encroachments were a "direct reflection of the government's failure" to provide basic housing to the poor [Kasturibha and Indira Nagar Residents Forum v The Secretary].
