Eviction of doctors/medical professionals over COVID-19 scare: Delhi Govt orders strict action against errant landlords [Read Order]

The Delhi Government has warned that, “such behaviour amounts to obstructing public servant in discharging their duties.”

Bar & Bench

The Delhi Government on Tuesday directed that strict penal action should be taken against landlords and house owners forcing the eviction of doctors, paramedical staff and other health care professionals from rented accommodation over misapprehensions that they have contracted the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Further, the concerned authorities have also been directed to submit daily action taken reports in this regard to the Additional Chief Secretary to Government Home Ministry.

The Government was prompted to issue the order following various complaints that health professionals were being harassed, discriminated against and forced to vacate their residence over fears that they were likely to have been infected by the coronavirus amidst treatment of patients.

Many doctors also took to social media to air grievances over the same.

Public appeals have also been made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention by the Central Government in the matter.

Taking note of these complaints, the Delhi Government has now warned that, “such behaviour amounts to obstructing public servant in discharging their duties.”

Further, the notification issued by Delhi's Health Ministry directs,

“... all the District Magistrates/Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Municipal Corporations/District Deputy Commissioners of Police are directed to take strict penal action against such landlords/house-owners under the relevant provisions of law and submit an Action Taken Report on a daily basis to the office of Addi. Chief Secretary (Home), Govt. of~ of Delhi.”
