Five NLSIU grads among those designated Senior Advocates by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has today designated thirty-seven lawyers as Senior Advocates. Out of these lawyers, five are from National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore..Here is a brief profile of each of the new designees..Anitha Shenoy.A graduate of the 1995 batch of National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU), Anitha Shenoy is a first generation lawyer. After graduation, Shenoy worked with Senior Counsel Indira Jaising for five years, after which she set up her independent practice. A year later, she passed the Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record examination..She went on to file cases for Advocate Sanjay Parikh, and thereafter took up partnership at Justice Ravindra Bhat’s office after he was elevated as a judge. In 2006, Shenoy was appointed Standing Counsel for the State of Karnataka..Menaka Guruswamy .Menaka Guruswamy graduated from NLSIU in the year 1997. She is a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Law (D. Phil.). She also received a Gammon fellowship for a Masters in Law at Harvard Law School..Guruswamy has practiced law in New York, as an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell. She has advised the United Nations Development Fund, New York and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), New York and UNICEF South Sudan on various aspects of International Human Rights Law..She was one of the counsel appearing for the petitioners in the challenge to Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which was struck down by the Supreme Court last year..She is currently a BR Ambedkar Research Scholar and Lecturer at Columbia Law School..Gopal Sankaranarayanan .Sankaranarayanan is a 2001 graduate of NLSIU. He has appeared in a number of important cases in the Supreme Court including the Firecracker ban, the Sabarimala and Triple Talaq cases, as well as a challenge to the conduct of CLAT 2018..Nikhil Nayyar.Nayyar is a 1993 graduate of NLSIU.
