Retired Gujarat HC Judge, PP Bhatt new Income Tax Appellate Tribunal President

Former judge of the Gujarat High Court, Justice PP Bhat has taken charge as the President of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). Following his retirement from the Gujarat High Court last month, Justice Bhat assumed charge of his new office as the ITAT head on October 24, 2018.

Justice Bhatt enrolled as an advocate with the Gujarat Bar Council in 1984. His areas of practice included Constitutional law, civil law, service law and criminal law. He was appointed as a City Civil and Sessions judge in 1995, and thereafter also served as Member Secretary of the Gujarat State Legal Service Authority from 2001.

In 2003 he was appointed the Registrar of the Gujarat High Court. Later, on the creation of the Registrar General post, he became the first Registrar General of High Court of Gujarat.

In 2007, he was repatriated and posted as City Civil and Sessions judge at Ahmedabad. After one more stint as the Registrar General, High Court of Gujarat from February 2008, he was again appointed a City Civil and Sessions Judge from in September 2010. He has also served as a Special Judge for the CBI Court.

In February 2011, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court. In June that year, he was transferred to the Jharkhand High Court. He was re-transferred back to the Gujarat High Court in February 2016.  He retired from Gujarat High Court on September 6, 2018.
