The Gujarat High Court on Monday took up suo motu cognizance of the rising incidents of ragging in educational institutions, particularly medical colleges, across the State. .A Division Bench of Chief Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh J Shastri has impleaded the Additional Chief Secretary of the State's Education Department along with the Commissioners of Higher Education, Technical Education etc."We are taking suo motu cognizance of the letter written to one of us (to CJ Kumar) by a sitting judge of this Court highlighting the rising incidents of ragging menace in the State. We issue notice to all these respondents, who are expected to state on an affidavit about the steps taken so far to contain the issue," Chief Justice Kumar said in his order. The authorities have to respond to the suo motu PIL by January 30. .A sitting judge had written the letter to CJ Kumar, relying on the recent reportage of ragging incidents by Ahmedabad Mirror.As per the news reports, a father of a first-year resident doctor had lodged a criminal complaint with the Vadodara Police against two senior students for torturing his son. The State has witnessed several others such incidents. In October last year, there were reports of a junior medical student being sodomised by his seniors.
