Gurugram hit and run: Court remands accused Kalyan Bainsla to police custody for two days

A Gurugram court on Wednesday remanded Kalyan Bainsla, the driver accused of hitting a woman biker, to the custody of Gurugram police for two days.

The Court also remanded Bainsla's cousin, Lavneesh, to police custody.

The accused were produced before Judicial Magistrate Ist Class (JMIC) Nidhi Beniwal.

They will be produced before the Court again on September 18. Advocate Lalit Bindal represented the accused.

Both the accused had been arrested from Rajasthan and brought to Gurugram on Tuesday.

The accused have been arrested in a case registered by the Sector 55/56 Police Station under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 281 (rash driving) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In the application moved before the magistrate today, the police also mentioned Section 78 (stalking) and 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the BNS.

The case was registered after the victim, Shivani Chauhan, posted a video on social media on Sunday showing a vehicle allegedly driven by Bainsla, a gym owner, speeding towards her and hitting her bike on the Golf Course Road. The video was captured by a camera mounted on the bike.

Chauhan, who goes by the name Sia on social media, is seen falling from her bike after the collision. She has accused Bainsla, referred to as Kalyan Singh in the court records, of harassing her before hitting her bike and of fleeing the spot after causing the accident.

After the video went viral on social media, the police registered a suo motu case in the matter.

However, the police initially did not invoke the offence of attempt to murder. It was later that Section 109 of the BNS was added to the case.

The incident sparked national outrage with people demanding strict action against the car driver.
