Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA) Charitable Trust has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Roshan Chagla, wife of the late Senior Advocate Iqbal Chagla, to establish a ₹2 crore Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholarship Endowment.
The fund's annual returns will support the education of at least two deserving scholars from underprivileged backgrounds in their final year at India's top law schools.
These students, to be known as Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholars, will receive comprehensive assistance covering tuition fees, boarding and hostel expenses, as well as support for internships, moot courts and other professional development opportunities.
Speaking on the occasion, Roshan Chagla said,
“Iqbal believed deeply in the power of law to create a fairer society. This endowment is a way to continue his legacy, ensuring that talented young minds, regardless of their means, have the opportunity to study law and make a difference.”
Justice Riyaz Chagla, who confirmed the MoU, added,
“This scholarship will not only honour my father’s life and work, but also invest in future generations of lawyers committed to justice and equity.”
IDIA Managing Trustee Shishira Rudrappa commented on the establishment of the endowment,
"This endowment will have a lasting impact, enabling us to support scholars at a crucial stage in their legal education and helping them step into the profession with confidence."
IDIA was founded with the vision of creating a more inclusive legal profession. It is a movement that identifies and trains underprivileged students with the potential to succeed at premier law schools, providing them with sustained financial support, mentorship and training.
