The application filed by Senior Counsel Indira Jaising for expediting the process of conferring senior designations on lawyers was disposed of today.Attorney General KK Venugopal pointed out to the Court that in light of the recent publication of the list of candidates that have applied for senior designation as well as invitation for objections to the names, the present application was rendered infructuous. The Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Ajay Rastogi accordingly held that the matter stands disposed of on account of being infructuous now..After the petition for streamlining the procedure for designating lawyers as Senior Advocates came to be filed in the Supreme Court by Jaising, the Court had refrained from designating lawyers as Senior Advocates during the pendency of the case. However, no designations were made even after the judgment was pronounced by the Court in October 2017.The delay in expediting the designation process in compliance with the October 2017 judgment had prompted Jaising to approach the Court again. Earlier this month, Jaising had filed the application praying that the judgment of the Supreme Court in the Senior Designation case be implemented in an effective and timely manner, and the process of designation of advocates as Senior Advocates be expedited.Inter alia, she had submitted that though a year had passed since the Supreme Court judgment, it is not known whether or not all the guidelines laid down by the Court have been complied with.Since then, the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates (CDSA) has released a list of 105 applicants, seeking recommendations on whether or not they should be designated as Senior Advocates. The notice inviting applications for designation as Senior Advocates had been published earlier, in August this year. In the second week of November, the list of applicants was also published, and stakeholders in the process were invited to make suggestions on the same to the CDSA within 15 days.In view of these developments, the Court has now disposed of Jaising’s application as infructuous. The last time the Court made senior designations from the Bar was in April 2015. In September 2018, the Supreme Court conferred the Senior gown on twenty-five retired High Court judges.
