J. CK Prasad in the running for Lokpal – SCBA Vice President, V Shekhar

Justice CK Prasad retired as Supreme Court judge yesterday after serving a term of over four years. In keeping with tradition, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) organized a farewell function for Justice Prasad. The function, which was initially scheduled to be held in the Supreme Court lawns, was shifted to the Indian Society of International Law, VKK Menon Bhawan..Speaking on the occasion, SCBA Vice President V Shekhar revealed an interesting fact when he said that, “the corridor buzz is that Justice Prasad is in [the] running for Lokpal.”.Justice Prasad, in his farewell speech, recalled his journey which “started on a cycle and ended in court room no. 4.” He said that he wanted to be an engineer but later decided to be a doctor as per his mother’s wish. However, since he did not get admission for medicine, he took up law..Justice Prasad also called upon senior members of the Bar to evince interest in cases relating to capital punishment. “If you are committed to the profession, it will never let you down”, he added..Earlier this month, a Bench presided by Justice Prasad had pronounced two important judgments. One pertained to Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code while the other was on the legality of orders passed by Shariat courts..Justice Prasad is the eighth Supreme Court judge to retire this year. The other seven who retired are Justices HL Gokhale, P Sathasivam, Gyan Sudha Misra, KS Radhakrishnan, AK Patnaik, SS Nijjar and BS Chauhan.
