A public interest litigation (PIL) petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking the intervention in relation to the sinking of land in Uttarakhand's hill town, Joshimath. .The plea filed by Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati has sought intervention of the Court to ensure immediate financial assistance and compensation to the residents of Joshimath.The plea was mentioned on Monday before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud who asked the lawyer to mention the matter tomorrow."This is an important matter related to Joshimath sinking," the lawyer submitted. "Mention it tomorrow when you are in the mentioning list," the CJI said..Joshimathi which has a population of around 17,000 is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at a height of 1,800 meters above sea level.Joshimath has been declared disaster-prone after cracks started appearing in buildings and on roads. Many people were evacuated after that.According to NDTV, there are around 4,500 buildings in Joshimath and 610 of these have developed huge cracks.
