Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Friday remarked in open court that both he and retiring Justice AS Oka have decided not to accept any post-retirement assignments. .The CJI made the comment while bidding farewell to Justice Oka, who officially retires tomorrow. "Both of us have already decided that we will not accept any post-retirement assignments and therefore, we can think of working together (after retirement)," he said. .A ceremonial bench comprising CJI Gavai, Justice Oka and Justice AG Masih sat this morning, to mark Justice Oka's last working day at the Supreme Court. CJI Gavai observed that Justice Oka has been a friend for the last 40 years or so, adding that his contributions go beyond authoring important judgments. "He has been a professor of law and ethics within the courtroom. He has always reminded that lawyers are the first officers of the court. Behind his firmness is the dedication of a teacher. His courtroom always encouraged ethical advocacy. What is admirable is the sheer energy with which he worked over these years. He did not even take official accommodation when he became a judge," CJI Gavai said. He also acknowledged that Justice Oka's efforts played a key role in bringing about a National Law University in Aurangabad.While speaking on Justice Oka's judgments, the CJI lauded the retiring judge's commitment to environmental causes, observing that sometimes harsh decisions have to be taken to prevent irreparable harm to the environment.CJI Gavai also joined in expressing his condolences on the recent demise of Justice Oka's mother. Notably, Justice Oka had returned to work a day after attending the funeral rites for his mother, who passed away on May 21. CJI Gavai noted that these events, which took place over the last two days, showed Justice Oka's unwavering commitment to justice.CJI Gavai urged all present to remember Justice Oka's tireless contributions to law and his devotion to constitutional provisions.
