Kerala Court grants bail to Trivandrum lawyer accused of assaulting junior woman advocate

A Kerala Court on Monday granted bail advocate Beyline Das, a lawyer practicing at Vanchiyoor Court in Trivandrum, in a case registered against him following allegations that he had physically assaulted a young woman lawyer working at his office..Judicial First Class Magistrate Court Judge Revitha KG passed the order today in Trivandrum.The Court had on Friday remanded Das to judicial custody for 14 days.Das will be released on bail on providing two sureties with a bond of ₹50,000 each. He has been barred from entering the jurisdiction of Vanchiyoor Police Station for two months or until the charge sheet is filed, whichever is earlier.He has also been directed to not attempt contacing the victim or influencing witnesses..The case has drawn significant attention within the legal community after the woman junior lawyer lodged a complaint alleging that Das attacked her at his office on May 13, 2025.The FIR registered by Vanchiyoor Police accuses Das of offences under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 74 (assault of woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.According to the FIR, the incident occurred when the junior lawyer raised a complaint against another colleague.Das allegedly slapped her, causing her to fall.When she tried to get up, he reportedly held her hands and slapped her again, leading to a swollen eye, bruises on her cheek, and mental trauma..Following the incident, the Trivandrum Bar Association initiated an internal inquiry and suspended Das from its membership, describing the complaint as "prima facie true and credible".Subsequently, on May 14, 2025, the Kerala Bar Council also took suo motu action, prohibiting Das from practicing before any Court, Tribunal, or Authority until the disciplinary proceedings against him are concluded.Although Das had filed an anticipatory bail application scheduled for hearing on May 16, he was apprehended before the hearing could take place..Das subsequently moved the plea for regular bail arguing that the incident was triggered by provocation from the woman lawyer. He alleged that she had allegedly obstructed and questioned him regarding an office matter.Das claimed that he acted in self-defence and that he had also been injured during the altercation.He also contended that Section 74 of the BNS was wrongly applied, as there was no sexual intent involved.He further argued even if the prosecutions version was accepted, Section 74 would not be applicable, making most of the charges against Das bailable.Contending that the charges against him were exaggerated, Das sought his release on bail..On the other hand, the prosecution argued that as a lawyer, Das is well aware of the legal process and could potentially influence witnesses, most of whom are from his own office, including the victim.The prosecution also argued that this was not an isolated incident as Das has previously been involved in assaults against other colleagues in his office..Beyline Das was represented by advocate Dileep Sathyan.Public Prosecutor Geena T appeared for the State. .Detailed judgment copy awaited.
