Senior Advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Menaka Guruswamy has been nominated as a member of the Joint Committee examining the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha nominated Guruswamy to the Joint Committee on May 20.
“The Chairman, Rajya Sabha has, on the 20 May, 2026, nominated Dr Menaka Guruswamy, Member, Rajya Sabha to be a member of the Joint Committee on the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026,” the notification stated.
The Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 23 this year by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The Bill was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee on the same day for detailed examination.
The Bill proposes amendments to the Companies Act, 2013 and the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008.
The Companies Act governs the incorporation, regulation, management and winding up of companies in India. The Limited Liability Partnership Act provides the legal framework for LLPs, which combine elements of partnerships and companies.
The Joint Committee is expected to examine the provisions of the Bill before it is taken up by Parliament for further consideration.
Guruswamy was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal earlier this year on a Trinamool Congress ticket. The TMC had announced her candidature on February 27, 2026 for the Rajya Sabha polls held on March 16. Her term as Rajya Sabha member began on April 3, 2026.
She took oath as a Rajya Sabha member in April 2026. She became India’s first openly queer Member of Parliament.
Guruswamy is a constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India.
