The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy has launched a new COVID legal helpline called “Ask Nyaaya” which is affiliated with Nyaaya, an open access digital resource incubated at the Centre..The helpline has a volunteer cohort of 150+ experienced lawyers and law students who are working to bridge the urban-rural digital divide and ensure information symmetry in the times of the pandemic..The team provides information relating to various socio-legal areas such as curfew rules, accessing relief from the government in times of death of a family member, commercial, labor and insurance laws, error correction in vaccine certificates etc..The information is available in six languages – English, Hindi, Kannada, Oriya, Bengali and Gujrati. The language base will expand slowly to include other regional languages based on the capacity of the volunteer cohort. .The “Ask Nyaaya” feature is available on the Nyaaya's website and social media channels, wherein the citizens can put their queries. The helpline will primarily be based on WhatsApp and can be accessed on the number - +91 9650108107, wherein the help seekers can message anytime stating their question and the state they live in..The team did a soft launch of the helpline and has already answered over 200 questions ranging from 15 states across the country. .According to Anisha Gopi, who leads Nyaaya, the helpline will help people to find accurate information on legal and procedural issues and will democratize access to legal information.
