NLU Meghalaya officially inaugurated at Shillong by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inaugurated a National Law University (NLU) for the State at its temporary campus in Mayurbhanj Complex, Shillong..Earlier this year, the Cabinet had approved the National Law University Ordinance, 2022 for setting up NLU Meghalaya. Professor Indrajit Dube, a professor at the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur was appointed as the Founding Vice Chancellor of the University..As reported by a local daily, the inaugural ceremony for setting up the NLU was attended by Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice, Sanjib Banerjee, State Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, and University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Indrajit Dube..Professor Dr Indrajit Dube to be NLU Meghalaya's first Vice Chancellor.Chief Minister Sangma, while addressing the gathering at the inauguration on Saturday, shared his hope for the University to become a centre of excellence."We will be having business administration combined with law, policy research with law, data science with law. This kind of innovation is what we need today and the kind of manpower that we need to build up today in the country. These courses are very innovative and the need of the hour... The value of an institute comes out on the basis of its research and innovation - not just product innovation, but process innovation as well. I hope that this University will become a center of excellence for all kinds of customary laws and research especially for the tribal society for the country as a whole," he said..Chief Minister Sangma also informed that close to ₹18-19 crores has already been invested in the infrastructure."We expect a total of about ₹25 crore to be spent in the infrastructure; a running expenditure annually of about ₹8 crores will be given by the Government, close to about ₹10 crores will be incurred annually. Therefore, quite a strong financial support will be given. We are also working to give a permanent campus," he said.
