A final year law student at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, Udita passed away on the night of May 21..As per reports, the cause of Udita's death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.The interim RGNUL Student Bar Council (RSBC) has claimed that there was a delay by the administration in transporting the student from the girls' hostel to the hospital. .As claimed by a member of the RSBC, Udita's batchmates found her lying unconscious in the corridor of the girls' hostel at around 10:45 PM. Multiple attempts to seek help from residential faculty and the RGNUL Health Centre went unanswered.Speaking to Bar & Bench, a student said, "Several resident faculty members possess private vehicles, but did not take the initiative to transport the student independently."The on-campus ambulance took 30 minutes to arrive at the girls' hostel and lacked functional equipment, it is claimed. The student was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital..The University is currently in the midst of End Semester Examinations. Udita had only two exams remaining before she could graduate as a lawyer.A condolence notice dated May 22 by the Registrar, RGNUL suspended academic activities for the day as a mark of respect. A prayer meeting has been held on May 23. .The RSBC had previously raised concerns about the functioning of the Health Centre, and had sent formal emails to the administration in this regard. A member of the RSBC said, "It is not like this has not been pointed out to them (RGNUL Administration) multiple times, people have struggled when they've had medical emergencies but now we have lost a student who could probably have been saved."Notably, the RSBC said that the Medical Officer had resigned well before the incident, and no replacement or qualified medical officer was present on campus on the night of the student's death..At the time of publishing this story, RGNUL administration officials have not responded to requests for a comment.
