"Like IB reports, its incorrect": CJI NV Ramana's reply to claim that he will write a romantic novel

The farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association for outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana witnessed some friendly banter between the CJI and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. .It started when SG Mehta claimed that the CJI is planning to write a romantic novel in Telugu. "From reliable sources I have gathered information which I will make public. CJI Ramana is passionate about Telugu literature and he is contemplating writing a romantic novel in Telegu. I do not know what inspired him to do this," the SG said in his speech.When it was the CJI's turn to speak, he refuted the claim that he is planning to write a romantic novel and said in lighter vein that the claim is as incorrect as Intelligence Bureau (IB) reports.He was taking a dig at the fact that IB reports on judges are many times cited when the question of their elevation or transfer comes up and some of them have been alleged to be false. "Like your Intelligence Bureau reports, I want to say that the information that I will write a romantic novel in Telugu is not correct," the CJI said in lighter vein.However, he did concede that he might "write something"."I may write something on literature, if at all," he said.CJI Ramana retired from office on Friday after serving at the bench for 22 years of which the final the 8 years were at the Supreme Court. .The SG in his speech also touched upon the judicial work of CJI Ramana and commended his style of writing judgments."One thread running in all judgments by CJI Ramana was that the judgments were capable of being understood by common man and there was no pretension of being learned. It is very difficult for a judge to be precise and simple in judgment writing," he said.The speed with which judges appointments were made and the zeal to improve the judicial infrastructure, also came in for praise."The speed with which appointments were made in High Courts and tribunals were made will be remembered. 1/3rd of the judges vacancy was filled by the collegium led by CJI NV Ramana. I have been often at the receiving end trying to help," the SG said..Farewell functions are often occasions when interesting personal anecdotes emerge from the Bar and the Bench.
