The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted bail to personal secretary of former Maharashtra home minister, Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case..Justice MS Karnik pronounced the order today directing Palande to deposit ₹1 lakh as bail bond along with surety. Palande had been arrested in 2021 in corruption and connected money laundering case in which the former Maharashtra Home Minister is the prime accused.Palande had earlier been granted bail by another bench of High Court in the connected money laundering case in December 20, 2022. He, however, could not be released from prison since he was yet to secure bail in the corruption case. After today's order, Palande will be released on bail from judicial custody. .While granting bail in the money laundering case, the High Court had noted that the prosecution version which relied heavily upon the statements of dismissed police officer Sachin Waze to rope in Palande, appeared fragile..Advocates Shekhar Jagtap and Sairuchita Chowdhary, appearing for Palande in the corruption case, argued that his client was granted bail in ED case with observations that ED’s probe in the case was on a weak footing and not enough to implicate his client. .Jagtap pointed out that Palande was a public servant, had roots in the society and was not flight risk and, hence, could be released on bail. Advocate Ashish Chavan for CBI opposed the bail plea. .Palande along with Deshmukh are embroiled in two investigations arising from same allegation - one by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for offence of corruption and the other by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the offence of money laundering..Deshmukh was granted bail in the money laundering case by the High Court on October 4. On December 12, the High Court ordered for his release on bail in the corruption case.Supreme Court had already dismissed appeal filed by the Enforcement Directorate challenging bail granted in the money laundering case and the CBI appeal in corruption case.
