Senior Advocate Dr Birendra Saraf is to be appointed as the new Advocate General for the State of Maharashtra..Earlier today, the Maharashtra cabinet headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had accepted the resignation of incumbent AG Ashutosh Kumbhakoni.In its meeting held today, the cabinet recommended Saraf's name. Once Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari gives his approval, Saraf will be appointed as next Advocate General of Maharashtra..Saraf has been practicing before the Bombay High Court for the past 25 yearsHe graduated from Government Law College, Mumbai and was a topper at Mumbai University in all three years of graduation.As a junior lawyer, he worked in the chambers of present Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.After Chandrachud was elevated as Bombay High Court judge in 2000, Saraf joined the chambers of former Advocate General Ravi Kadam.Saraf was designated as Senior Advocate in the year 2020.He served as Secretary of the Bombay Bar Association for six years and is presently the Vice-President..Through the course of his career, he has appeared in several high-profile and controversial cases.He successfully argued for Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut in her plea challenging demolition activity by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on her property in Bandra in September 2020.The High Court quashed the demolition notice and permitted Ranaut to take steps to make her property habitable.Saraf also appeared in the proceedings pertaining to the heavily contentious dispute going on between Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited and its largest shareholder, Invesco Developing Markets Fund.He also represented Dhyandev Wankhede, father of IRS officer Sameer Wankhede, who formerly headed the Narcotics Control Bureau during the Aryan Khan drug case.
