High time to consider if such persons should be chopped off deadwood: Calcutta HC takes objection to inefficient delivery of court-ordered post

The Division Bench of the Calcutta High comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B Nair Radhakrishnan and Justice Arijit Banerjee on Friday expressed that they were “amazed” to see that the postal articles which were issued under the orders of the High Court to the Kalighat and Tarapith Temple authorities, have been returned stating insufficient address.

As per the petitioner, the addresses were obtained from the websites of the aforesaid institutions. While taking strong objection to the ineffective service of the personnel belonging to the postal department, the Calcutta High Court stated:

…..If there are such persons, who are unable to find out prominent institutions like the aforesaid temples, it is high time to consider whether they should be permitted to continue in service or are liable to be chopped off as deadwoods.

We say this particularly because if deadwoods go rotten in departments, further parasites will easily cling on to the same and destroy the fulcrum of the entire establishment, which provides connectivity between people through the postal department.

The Court, therefore, directed the counsel appearing for the petitioner to provide the track records of the postal articles to the Postmaster General having jurisdiction over the State of West Bengal.

The Postmaster General has also been directed to conduct an enquiry into the same in order to find out if there is any deficiency in the service of the notices. A report has been ordered to be placed before the High Court on the next date of hearing on January 17.
