Calcutta High Court laments delayed listing of two-decade-old Habeas Corpus plea after "23 years of hibernation"

The case was last heard on December 22, 1997 when the Court had ordered that it should be listed after 3 months.

Delay in listing cases including those involving personal liberty came to the fore yet again when the Calcutta High Court on Friday took up a two-decade-old habeas corpus writ petition. (Kanchan Tanti v. State of West Bengal and Ors.)

The case concerned a hospital's failure to hand over a newborn to his mother after birth.
