The Central government on Thursday notified the appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with effect from March 31..Justice Sivagnanam will take over the post after the retirement of the current Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava..Interestingly, the Supreme Court Collegium had on February 9 recommended the appointment of Justice Sivagnanam as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and not Acting Chief Justice..In its resolution, the Collegium had noted that the Madras High Court, which is the parent High Court of Justice Sivagnanam, has only one Chief Justice of a High Court - Justice S Manikumar of the Kerala High Court.Noting that the consultee judges had okayed the Collegium's proposal to recommend Justice Sivagnanam's name, the resolution further stated,"Apart from this, the period which has been served by Mr Justice T S Sivagnanam as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court would provide useful experience in his work as the Chief Justice of that High Court.".Justice Sivagnanam completed his B.Sc. at Loyola College, Chennai and B.L. from Madras Law College. He enrolled in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in September 1986. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court in March 2009 and was made permanent two years later.
