Collegium recommends appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

The Supreme Collegium has recommended the elevation of Justice Sujoy Paul as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Paul has been serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court since September 2025. He had been transferred there from the Telangana High Court in July 2025.

"The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 09th January, 2026 has recommended appointment of Shri Justice Sujoy Paul, Judge, High Court at Calcutta (PHC: Madhya Pradesh) as Chief Justice, High Court at Calcutta," the Supreme Court said in a statement released today.

Earlier, Justice Paul had been transferred from his parent Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Telangana High Court in 2024, following a personal request. In January 2025, he was made Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.

Justice Paul enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990 and practiced in civil, constitutional, industrial, service and other areas of law before various courts.

He was elevated as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur on May 27, 2011 and became a permanent judge on April 14, 2014.

Following his transfer, he took oath as a judge of the Telangana High Court on March 26, 2024.
