Common mission of judges, lawyers is to administer justice: SC judge Justice DY Chandrachud

The object of both judges and lawyers is to administer justice to common man and it is this quest for justice which unifies the Bench and the Bar, Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud said on Saturday. .The truth might be one but the paths to truth are many and this is especially so in a court of law, he said."We are all dressed in black and white. It is a symbol of the homogeneity of this profession. We dress like each other because we represent a common mission of justice for the citizens. But do not be misled by the homogeneity of our bar and bench which represents the universal pursuit of justice. We all represent one common mission which is to administer justice to the common man. It is in this quest for justice that we unify as judges and lawyers," said Justice Chandrachud."There are many shades of truth, there is no one universal truth. If you believe as a judge or lawyer that there is one universal truth, then you forget the essence of humanity," he added..The younger members at the Bar must be nurtured and made to understand this, the judge emphasised. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 'Annexe building’ of Aurangabad Bench of Bombay High Court. .The judge in his speech also highlighted the achievements of judiciary, especially with respect to disposal of cases. While conceding that pendency in courts in India is high, the Supreme Court judge also said that courts have disposed of large number of cases."We find from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) that we have 15.42 crores of orders available on the website. Let us celebrate the feat of Indian judiciary. We have 4 crore pending cases but we have 11 crores cases disposed of," he said..The High Courts have 56.02 lakh cases pending and 3.18 crore cases have been disposed of, he said."In Maharashtra, over 48 lakh cases are pending. the oldest case is from Angola Taluka where the accused is absconding since 1958. 16,474 have been stayed by High Court," the SC judge highlighted.Hence, just as there is cause to celebrate there should also be introspection on the way forward, he said..See full event below.
