Female law interns will be allowed to wear salwar kameez to courts: Bar Council of Delhi Chairman

The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has said that it will amend its dress code resolution to allow female law interns to wear black and white salwar kameez as well. .Speaking to Bar & Bench, BCD Chairman Senior Advocate KK Manan said that the issue raised is important and the amendment will be made today itself so that female interns do not face any difficulty. We will make sure that the amendment is made today itself so that female interns who are not comfortable wearing pants and shirt can go to court in Indian attire as well," Manan said. .The BCD had held a meeting on December 16 where it unanimously resolved that the dress code for law interns will be white shirt with black tie, black pant and black coat. It had also decided that it would be mandatory for all practicing advocates to wear neck bands and not a black tie, so that the law interns and advocates can be distinguished..The meeting was held following the Delhi High Court's order that directed the BCD to consult all bar associations in the national capital and reach a consensus on what uniform law interns should wear.Justice Prathiba M Singh had passed the order after a law intern challenged the Shahdara Bar Assocation (SBA) resolution restricting interns from wearing black coats in Delhi's Karkardooma courts. The resolution required them to wear white shirt, blue coat and trousers to distinguish them from lawyers.
