<p>President of India, Ram Nath Kovind on Monday signed off on appointment of Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). </p>.<p>Justice Ramana, who will be the 48th CJI, was appointed to the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.</p>.<p>He will take over as CJI on April 24, 2021 after the retirement of incumbent CJI SA Bobde on April 23.</p><p>Justice Ramana's name was recommended by CJI <a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/chief-justice-of-india-sa-bobde-recommends-appointment-of-justice-nv-ramana-as-next-cji">SA Bobde</a> to take over the country's highest judicial office, in line with the seniority norm followed by Supreme Court in appointing CJIs.</p><p>Justice Ramana will have a considerably long tenure as CJI with over 16 months at the helm before he retires on August 26, 2022.</p>.<p>Recently, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister <strong><a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/andhra-pradesh-cm-ys-jaganmohan-reddy-affidavit-sa-bobde-complaint-oath-allegations-nv-ramana-high-court-judges">YS Jagan Mohan Reddy</a></strong> had written to CJI Bobde complaining about Justice <strong>NV Ramana</strong> in connection with the Amaravati land scam.</p><p>However, the Supreme Court, after following an in-house procedure to examine the allegations made by Reddy, <a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/supreme-court-rejects-complaint-ys-jagan-mohan-reddy-justice-nv-ramana-amaravati-land-scam-in-house-inquiry">dismissed</a> the same. </p>.<p><strong>[Read Notification]</strong></p>
