Karnataka HC directs State to reconsider decision to pay "unreasonably low" compensation to migrants whose shanties were burned down

"Somebody takes law into his own hands and destroys the houses of poor people....And you (state government) are paying them a compensation of Rs 6,100?", the Court observed.

The Karnataka High Court today directed the state government to reconsider its decision to pay compensation of only Rs 6,100 to migrant workers whose huts were burnt down by certain miscreants during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This direction was passed by the Court while dealing with a suo motu plea dealing with the burning of temporary shanties that had housed migrant workers in East Bangalore.
