Lakhimpur Kheri: UP government forms Commission of retired High Court judge to probe violence

The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a single-member Commission led by former Allahabad High Court judge, Justice Pradeep Kumar Srivastava to investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which eight people were allegedly killed..Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel signed off on the appointment of Justice Srivastava to probe the violence. The one-man Committee is required to submit a report within two months. "Whereas the Governor is on the opinion that it is necessary to hold an inquiry with regard to matter of public importance regarding the entire incident of death of 8 persons in Lakhimpur Kheri district," reads the notification..The Supreme Court today sought a status report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the First Information Report (FIR) registered and arrests made in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri incident A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana termed the incident as "unfortunate" and directed Additional Advocate General (AAG) Garima Prashad to get instructions on the status of the FIR as well as details about petitions pending before the Allahabad High Court in relation to the incident..An FIR has already been registered against the son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra and several other persons in connection with the Lakhimpur violence.
