The Court was dealing with a case where a man was convicted for murdering his mother, wife, and children before attempting suicide on account of mental stress stemming from financial difficulties due to demonetisation.

In commuting the death penalty awarded to a man convicted for murdering his mother, wife and two children allegedly as part of plans to die by group suicide, the Madras High Court recently observed that life imprisonment would be more severe a punishment in this case than a death sentence (Dhamodaran @ Prakash v. State).
