The Madras High Court last week dismissed a petition that had challenged a notification issued by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) asking electricity consumers to use Aadhaar authentication services as a condition for receipt of subsidies and other benefits. .Earlier this month, TANGEDCO had issued a notification stating that electricity consumers across the State wishing to avail subsidies and other benefits, must undergo Aadhaar authentication. The petitioner, advocate ML Ravi, argued that TANGEDCO cannot insist on Aadhaar details of its consumers in return for subsidies and services funded by the State exchequer. The State body, however, told the Court that as per its notification, such consumers who had not enrolled for Aadhaar could also submit either bank passbook, voter ID, ration card, PAN, passport or driving licence until Aadhaar enrolment. However, the petitioner argued that the provision for submitting other documents had not been publicised, and TANGEDCO continued to insist on Aadhaar authentication from the domestic electricity consumers. The Court after hearing the parties dismissed the plea.
