<p>The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kolkata Police today tabled a report on the progress of the investigation into the killing of social activist and lawyer Manish Shukla in a sealed cover before the Calcutta High Court.</p>.<p>The Court was hearing a plea seeking an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the brutal murder of Shukla on October 4.</p>.<p>A Bench of Justices <strong>Sanjib Banerjee </strong>and <strong>Arijit Banerjee</strong> heard the matter today.</p>.<p>When the report was submitted, the Court directed the Advocate General to take possession of the same and keep it in safe custody. </p>.<p>The parties were also asked to exchange their pleadings before the next hearing. The State has been given time till November 2 to file an affidavit-in-opposition to the petition.</p>.<p>Additionally, the State is required to serve its affidavit upon the petitioner seven days before the next hearing, after which the petitioner may file an affidavit-in-response before the hearing.</p>.<p><a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/plea-filed-in-calcutta-hc-for-cbi-probe-into-murder-of-advocate-gunned-down" rel="nofollow">Advocate </a><strong><a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/plea-filed-in-calcutta-hc-for-cbi-probe-into-murder-of-advocate-gunned-down" rel="nofollow">Priyanka Tibrewal </a></strong>initiated the Public Interest Litigation after Shukla was shot dead on October 4 in Titagarh, West Bengal.</p>.<p>In her petition, Tibrewal states that the deceased victim was mercilessly shot down by unidentified assailants riding on motorcycles, near the Titagarh Police Station.</p>.<p>Alleging that the murder took place in a pre-planned manner, the petition states that Shukla was shot in a crowded area "<em>which is indicative of an abysmal law and order situation and complete disregard for the civic machinery of the State."</em></p>.<p>Against this backdrop, Tribewal's plea sought either of the three reliefs:</p><ul><li><p>Directions to transfer the probe to the CBI</p></li><li><p>Court-monitored probe</p></li><li><p>Directions to constitute an SIT to investigate the murder</p></li></ul>.<p>The matter is now posted for November 10.</p>.<p><strong>Read the Order here:</strong></p>
