[BREAKING] PM Modi security breach: Supreme Court to hear plea seeking court-monitored probe tomorrow

The Supreme Court will hear tomorrow the plea seeking a court-monitored probe into the security breach related to the Punjab visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi [Lawyers Voice v. State of Punjab and Others]..The matter will be heard by the three-judge Bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli on Friday as the first item.Senior Advocate Maninder Singh mentioned the plea before CJI Ramana on Thursday."The Writ Petition (Civil) Diary No. 971/2022 filed by the petitioner – Lawyers Voice under Article 32 of the Constitution of India is orally mentioned by Mr. Maninder Singh, learned Senior counsel seeking urgent listing of the same. In view of the above, the Registry is directed to list this matter on Friday, the 7th January, 2022 as First Item before us," the order passed by the Court on Thursday reads..Notably, the Government of Punjab has also constituted a two-member high level committee to conduct a thorough probe into the security lapse. The committee will have former Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court Justice Mehtab Singh Gill, and Principal Secretary, Home Affairs & Justice, Government of Punjab Anurag Verma as its members..The plea filed by an organisation called Lawyers Voice has also sought the suspension of Punjab Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari and Director General of Police Sidharth Chattopadhyaya.It also prays for the apex court to take cognizance of the incident and direct the Bathinda District Judge to collect all official documents and materials regarding the deployment and movements of the Punjab Police during the PM's visit.It was stated that the security lapse was intentional on the part of the Congress-led government in Punjab."The security lapse, as per reliable reports in the print and the electronic media, and as per the Press Information Bureau report of Central Government, was clearly intentional and raises a serious question as to national security and the role played by the present political dispensation in the State of Punjab," the plea said.It further added,"The overall responsibility for ensuring the safety of the Prime Minster rests with the State Government and the responsibility for providing proximate security will rest with the Special Protection Group (SPG) as per the SPG Act 1988.
