Showik Chakraborty, brother of actress Rhea Chakraborty, was granted bail by a special court at Mumbai in a case registered on allegations that he procured drugs for the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput..Special court of judge GB Gurao, dealing with offences under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, allowed Chakraborty to be released forthwith upon the furnishing of provisional cash bail of Rs. 50,000. He was granted 4 weeks time to furnish the sureties, failing which the bail would stand cancelled..He was also directed to attend the office of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) once a month for 6 months..Chakraborty was arrested by the NCB for allegedly procuring and financing illicit drugs and harbouring offenders in relation to narcotic substances..Chakraborty submitted in his bail plea that the NCB did not have a shred of evidence to show that he was complicit in any of the offences alleged against him..He added that the probable offences against him were bailable in nature as the imprisonment term prescribed for those offences was 1 year or less..Chakraborty also submitted that while there were identical allegations against others co-accused in the case, only he was charged with Section 27A (financing illicit traffic and harbouring offenders) of the NDPS Act..It was also contended that since the statements required by the agency have already been recorded, there was no reason for the NCB to keep him in custody anymore. .Chakraborty was remanded to judicial custody on September 9, 2020. The Special Court had rejected his first bail application on September 11, 2020..On October 7, 2020, the Bombay High Court refused to grant him bail, although his sister, Rhea Chakraborty, was granted bail.
