UB cheers as Supreme Court stays ₹873 crore penalty on beer companies for cartelisation

The Court issued an interim stay in a batch of appeals against the NCLAT order that had refused to interfere with the penalty imposed by the CCI in 2021.

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) that had upheld a ₹873 crore penalty on United Breweries (UB) and other companies for alleged carterlisation in the production and sale of beer in India [United Breweries Limited v. Competition Commission of India and ors].
