Supreme Court strength increases to 37 as 5 new judges take oath

Five new Supreme Court judges assumed office on Tuesday raising the working strength of the Court from 32 to 37.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant administered oath of office to Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli and V Mohana.

While the first four were serving as High Court Chief Justices before their elevation to the top court, Mohana was directly elevated from the bar to the bench.

The appointments come days after the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court was increased from 34 to 38 through an ordinance issued by the government.

The recommendation to elevate the appointees was made by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI Kant last week.

The same was cleared by the Central government on June 1.
