Supreme Court suspends hearing for the day to pay homage to Late Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar

The Supreme Court of India suspended its hearings for the day as a mark of respect to Late Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar who passed away on April 24, 2021..Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and other judges, who were slated to hear cases today, gathered in the Court and observed two-minute silence, before the CJI said that the hearings today would stand suspended. ."There’s an important announcement. The Judicial business of today will remain suspended as a mark of respect and all matters listed today will be taken up tomorrow," said CJI Ramana.."Was hoping for his speedy recovery; passing came as a rude shock:" CJI NV Ramana condoles demise of Justice Mohan Shantanagoudar.Along with Supreme Court, High courts like Punjab and Haryana, Allahabad and Karnataka too have called off hearings today as a mark of respect to the judge..Justice Shantanagoudar passed away at Gurugram at the age of 62 after prolonged illness. He was recently infected with viral pneumonia and died of cardiac arrest at 10.15 pm on Saturday.."I was hoping for his speedy and complete recovery and his return to the Bench at the earliest. The news of his passing has come as a rude shock. I have lost a valued colleague. In the last four years of my association with him in the Supreme Court, I have benefitted immensely from his amazing legal acumen," CJI Ramana said on Sunday through a press release. .Justice Shantanagoudar born on May 5, 1958 and enrolled as an advocate in September 1980. He practiced for one year at Dharwad before shifting his practice to Bengaluru.He served as vice-chairperson of Karnataka State Bar Council from 1991 to 1993 and as chairperson of Karnataka State Bar Council during 1995 and 1996. He also served as State Public Prosecutor of Karnataka State from 1999 to 2002 before he became a judge of the Karnataka High Court. He then went on to serve as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court before he was made Supreme Court judge in February 2017.
