The Madras High Court Friday took suo motu cognisance of the incident in which a 19-year-old student was sexually assaulted inside the Anna University campus premises in Chennai earlier this week..A vacation bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and V Lakshminarayan directed the Tamil Nadu government to submit a report on the incident and its probe by 2.15 pm this afternoon.The bench initiated the so motu proceedings following a letter written to the Court by an advocate R Varalakshmi raising concerns on the law and order in the State and the safety of students in the city..On December 25, the Chennai police arrested a roadside biryani vendor, Gnanasekaran, for allegedly sexually assaulting the student of Anna University on the institute’s campus.As per the complainant, the incident occurred on December 23 this year. After the incident, the complainant approached the police and also filed a complaint with the University’s Internal Complaints Committee for prevention of sexual harassment.
