A 63-year-old man attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison inside a court after he was convicted and sentenced under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexually assaulting a 11-year-old girl..According to a report in Mathrubhumi, the man, identified as Ganesan, was at the Irinjalakuda Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) when the suicide attempt occurred. The man was sentenced to 48 years imprisonment for various offences and was also directed to pay ₹1.2 lakh fine, or undergo 2 years and 9 months imprisonment in default. Since some of the sentences were to run concurrently, he would have had to spent 20 years in jail. Immediately after the incident, the man was rushed to the hospital where he remains under monitoring. .A similar case occurred in the Bombay High Court recently when a 55-year-old man, who lost his case, attempted to die by suicide inside the Court by cutting his wrist. He was, however, stopped in the middle of the act after advocate Mahesh Rawoo, who was standing close to him, intervened and managed to restrain him.
