Merger Market 2015 Q1 M&A League Tables: Amarchand Mangaldas tops deal value; AZB tops deal count

As per the Merger Market 2015 Q1 M&A League tables, the (undivided) Amarchand Mangaldas tops the league table by value with 11 deals valued at $5.2 billion while AZB & Partners tops the league table by deal count with 15 deals valued at $1.75 billion.

Deal Value

PH Bathiya & Associates follows Amarchand Mangaldas with 5 deals valued at $3.1 billion beating AZB & Partners, which is placed third with 11 deals valued at only $1.7 billion, almost half of PH Bathiya’s deal value.

One of the bigger deals on which both Amarchand Mumbai and PH Bathiya worked include Dilip Shanghvi’s acquisition of a 23 per cent stake in Suzlon Energy for an equity investment of 1,800 crore ($288 million). The other high value deal done by Amarchand Mumbai was the acquisition of Avantha’s Korba West Power Company by Adani Power valued at 4,800 crore ($770 million).

Luthra & Luthra Law Offices made it to the league table at fourth position with 5 deals valued $923 million followed by Vaish Associates making it to the table with just one deal – the UltraTech Cement acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates’ Madhya Pradesh Cement Plants valued at $842 million. Both Amarchand Mumbai and Vaish Associates acted on this transaction.

Trilegal is ranked sixth with 3 deals valued at $595 million.

The other firms to make it the league table by value are J. Sagar Associates, Khaitan & Co, Crawford Bayley, Krishnamurthy & Co, Desai & Diwanji, Tatva Legal, S&R Associates, Nishith Desai Associates and Platinum Partners.

Deal Count

Amarchand Mangaldas ranks second with 11 deals. Desai & Diwanji beats other firms with 6 deals valued at $290 million followed by PH Bathiya, Luthra & Luthra and Tatva Legal, with 5 deals each.

JSA and Trilegal are ranked seventh and eighth with 4 and 3 deals respectively. Khaitan & Co, Majumdar & Partners and Crawford Bayley made it to the league table with 2 deals each.

International Firms

International firms Gomez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados, Morrison & Foerster and Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe acted on a single deal valued $2.5 billion, followed by DLA Piper, Linklaters and Weil Gotshal & Manges, also acting on a $878m deal although DLA acted on 2 other deals as well.
