Malayalam actor-producer Vijay Babu has moved the Kerala High Court seeking anticipatory bail in a rape case that was registered against him after an actress accused him of sexually exploiting her [Vijay Babu v State of Kerala]..The matter was mentioned before Justice Ziyad Rahman AA who agreed to post the matter for consideration after the court's ongoing summer vacation ends. Babu's counsel informed the court that he is not pressing for any interim relief at the moment..In the plea filed through Advocate S Rajeev, Babu has contended that the complaint against him was nothing but an attempt to blackmail him. He also alleged that the police is guided by the intense scrutiny and wide speculations that have been widely published by the media relating to the case. Therefore, he approached the court seeking anticipatory bail under Section 438 Code of Criminal Procedure. .The case was registered on the basis #MeToo revelations made by a debutante- actress alleging that Babu sexually exploited her under the guise of considering her for acting roles. A complaint was subsequently registered with the Ernakulam Police. The police issued a look out notice against him as he has allegedly been absconding since the case came to light. However, Babu went online on FaceBook Live and denied all allegations raised against him.Significantly, he revealed the name of the survivor during the course of the live-streaming.A separate case was then registered against Babu under Section 228A (disclosure of the identity of the victim in certain offences) of the Indian Penal Code. In light of the heavy backlash and criticism of the video, Babu later removed the video from FaceBook.A few years ago, Babu's actor and co-producer Sandra Thomas had accused him of physically assaulting her at her office but the complaint was later withdrawn. He had taken to FaceBook Live to claim his innocence then as well.
