Bar & Bench

How many times have you been left dreaming of walking along those swanky glazed corridors of the law firms in the capacity of the Senior Partner? How many times have you wondered, whether all your honesty, hard work, aspirations, dedication, loyalty and intelligence are sufficient for you to scale those heights or something else too is necessary for you to reach the pinnacle?

How many times have you been left dreaming of walking along those swanky glazed corridors of the law firms in the capacity of the Senior Partner? How many times have you wondered, whether all your honesty, hard work, aspirations, dedication, loyalty and intelligence are sufficient for you to scale those heights or something else too is necessary for you to reach the pinnacle?

Well, it is an everyday thought that most of us have been left contemplating. In the mad rush out there to grab the seat at the earliest, we experience myriad manifestations that life throws at us, making us realize that somewhere, somehow, we need to compromise on our priced values to get to the top.

This book is about such varied first-hand experiences of the author at two of India’s finest law firms – Mulla & Mulla and AZB & Partners, Mumbai. Here battered and there flattered by life as he seems to be while at the law firms, M. Rishi Kumar has come up with this legal fiction, amalgamating reality with several fictional and semi-fictional characters. The book has been published by Cedar Books.

Rishi Kumar is currently practicing at the Madras High Court and has his independent practice too. He has recently completed his dream course of Screenwriting from the prestigious New York Film Academy, New York to pursue his other passion, Films. His first full length feature movie script is under consideration by a famous production house of Mumbai.

Speaking to Bar & Bench, Rishi Kumar shared some of his insights into his life with law. He has pursued his B.Com. from the University of Madras and LL.B. from Bangalore University. When asked about his aptitude towards film making, he said that films and creative writing have always been his passion and hobby. Film-making has many aspects into it, and he is more into Script and Screen writing.

Saying that he quit Mulla & Mulla for better pay and prospects and AZB for personal and professional reasons, he said that coming from a family of non lawyers and having got the opportunity to work with two of the best law firms in India, he thought he had to share his experience at the law firms with budding lawyers and law students. This is what motivated him to write the book.

Expressing that his experience at the law firms have been very useful and productive, giving him confidence to manage his own practice and to have a name for himself, he adviced young advocates/students aspiring to be the future Mota Seths as follows:

“I would suggest that before you join or aspire to become a Mota Seth in any law firm, see if there is a meeting of minds with the people you are going to work with, don’t just join for monetary gains or comforts.  Secondly set a goal for yourself and put in sincere and dedicated effort to achieve that.”
