A Mumbai court has directed the police to conduct an enquiry into a defamation and stalking complaint filed by Yasmeen Wankhede, the sister of IRS officer and former NCB Zonal director Sameer Wankhede, against former minister Nawab Malik..The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ashish Keshavrao Awari, instructed the police to submit an enquiry report by February 15.The complaint, initially filed in 2021 at the Andheri court, was later transferred to the Bandra court. In her complaint, Wankhede has accused Malik of making false, defamatory and scandalous allegations against her in various tweets and television interviews. .Wankhede highlighted a series of defamatory incidents, including a tweet in which Malik allegedly linked her to Fletcher Patel, whom he claimed was involved in shady activities in Bollywood. She also mentioned a televised interview where Malik reportedly referenced certain photographs to cast aspersions on her character. Additionally, Wankhede referred to a tweet featuring a photograph of her in the Maldives, which she claimed was accompanied by a defamatory caption insinuating that her visit was related to extortion.Further, she criticized a tweet that displayed a photo of a supposed chat with a drug peddler. She argued that the person was not a drug dealer and that the image appeared to have been tampered..Wankhede argued that these allegations were not only false but part of a deliberate attempt to damage her reputation. She contended that the tweets implied she was involved in extortion, which she strongly denied. Wankhede also claimed that these accusations were aimed at interfering with the work of the National Customs Bureau (NCB) and pressuring the agency to compromise its investigations.Wankhede stated that she had filed complaints about the defamatory content with the police, but no action was taken. As a result, she approached the Andheri court seeking the issuance of a notice under Sections 354D (stalking), 499, 500 (defamation), and 509 (insulting a woman’s modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.At the hearing, Wankhede's counsel, advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh, requested the court that the police conduct an enquiry before issuing summons, citing that Malik lives outside the jurisdiction. The Court then proceeded to direct the police to submit their enquiry report by February 15.
