Exclusive: Nisha Uberoi to leave AZB for possible move to Trilegal to head their competition law practice

Nisha Kaur Uberoi has resigned from AZB & Partners and is likely to join Trilegal as Head of Competition Law practice, according to sources.

It is understood that Trilegal partnership has triggered the voting process.

Interestingly, if Uberoi joins Trilegal partnership, she would be the first woman partner in Mumbai office and fourth in the firm. Other women partners include Charandeep Kaur, Kosturi Ghosh and Upasna Rao.

Zia Mody commented:

“..Her (Nisha) moving on so quickly is unfortunate. The path forward for the 3 partner AZB competition team of Samir Gandhi, Nisha and Rahul Rai was personally very exciting for me.

However, Ajay, Bahram and I wish Nisha all the very very best. She is an excellent lawyer with great work ethic. I look forward to watching her grow.”

We have reached out to Trilegal Partners Rahul Matthan and Karan Singh, who were not available for a comment at the time of breaking this story.

Uberoi had joined AZB in July 2016 from Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, where she was heading the firm’s competition practice. At AZB, she was co-heading the competition practice.

According to sources, Uberoi’s entire team will be moving along with her.

Zia Mody had spoken to Bar & Bench when Nisha joined AZB from CAM in May 2016. “Having Nisha come on board as Co-Head will even further accelerate and deepen our existing Top Tier position in this practice and we hope to soon put blue water between us and the rest of the market.”

Nisha is the lead law firm Partner on the cement cartel case in which Cement companies were penalized INR 6,700 crores by the CCI. At AZB she is currently advising on the competition law aspect of the $ 22 billion Idea-Vodafone merger.

A graduate of National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Uberoi started her career with Amarchand Mangaldas in 2002. In 2005, she moved to Singapore, where she worked at Rajah & Tann and Ashurst, before returning in 2010 to rejoin Amarchand Mangaldas. She was made partner in 2012 and was made the head of the Competition practice in 2016.

In, 2015, Uberoi also made it to the inaugural list of Asia Legal Business (ALB) Asia’s 40 under 40.
